The High Wesolution April 2010 Newsletter
Howdy my fellow gear heads. Spring time is finally here. A lot of work has been done in Wesonator land, so time for a little update.
The year started off with our honeymoon on the other Emerald Isle, Montserrat. Those who know me won’t be surprised to learn that I actually ended up working a few days (my wife Debbie really loves me!). Peter Filleul and I installed mastering software at the ZJB radio station and local talent Tabu’s private studio, which we followed up with a couple of intense demo and workshop sessions.
We also organised a super cool jam session at the Cultural Centre, with Peter on keys, Miles Bould on drums and his wife Yolanda Charles on bass, so that I could re-calibrate the Yamaha M7CL and do some serious in-depth workshops on F.O.H. mix techniques and signal routing.
Back in London and still fairly jet-lagged, Adam Norsworthy and I holed up in Ralph Salmins’s private studio to record and co-produce a fresh and exciting new band, Boy On The Roof. We put down 3 tracks with the guys performing live in the studio. I then mixed the project back at The Sonic Cuisine.
The Sonic Cuisine has seen quite a fair chunk of mixing over the last few months. We finalised the Delta Unit EP mixes. Jules Dickens came in for me do some more balancing on his work and Elliott Randall and I did a really cool mix of one of his songs. We were lucky enough to be able to use Analogue Tube’s AT-101 limiter. I got to do a lot more work on Elliott’s guitar work when Hugh Wilkinson, percussionist extraordinaire, called me and asked if I was available to mix three disco library tracks for him. Lava lamps, mirror balls, flairs, monster multi-tracks and old school mix techniques. Man we had fun and the Sonic Cuisine was vibing big time! Check out the results on Hugh’s Myspace and the tracks are available to license through KPM.
I was let off my Sonic Cuisine leash a few times. I spent a fab day in RAK’s studio 2 recording Alexandra Burke’s lush vocal and I popped down to Chichester to record 5 demo tracks for Deborah Bonham, which we then mixed back at The Cuisine.
Ichinchilla has started work on the new album “Speed Thrills” and we’re mixing it back at the Ichinchilla Villa in East London.
It’s always exciting when you get to work in a new studio. I had the pleasure to work at Miloco’s Engine Room for the day. The job at hand was the 5.1 remix of an all time classic. Needless to say the Neve VR and I got on very well.
On the Mastering side there’s been a lot of Sound Discs work and keep your eyes and ears out for Samantha Heard’s new EP.
And gearsluts that we are... we acquired a few new bits and bobs; D.A.V.’s 501 mic pre for the lunch box, Minnetonka’s amazing Surcode for DTS-HD (Thanks David Miles Huber and Markus Hintz!), the SE Reflection filter and Manley’s Massive Passive for our UAD-2.
Make music, Enjoy music, Be surrounded by music...
See you on the other side of the glass.
Wes
